A Canopy of Colorful Umbrellas Spotted in Portugal

This beautiful installation of umbrellas was recently spotted in Águeda, Portugal by photographer Patrícia Almeida. Almost nothing is known about the artist behind the project or its significance, but it’s impossible to deny the joy caused by taking a stroll in the shadowy rainbow created by hundreds of parasols suspended over this public walkway. It reminds be of Garth Britzman’s bottle carport.

What if I created a cartoon reality? Everything had to be drawn? She created the world as she walked along?

Or, sort of alone the same lines, but sort of not…what if I created a white reality. As in, the walls are white, her clothes are white, everything is white. And the things she encounter appear out of nowhere in a splash of all things colorful.

Hmm, it doesn’t even necessarily have to be Alice in Wonderland-esque. They could be real things…well, things that are plausible enough to seem real in a dream-like state. For example, one time she could encounter people all painted to look like they are greyscale, and it’ll be like she’s in a black-and-white tv show. “You wanted to escape reality, didn’t ya?”

Or a scene that is reminiscent of Snow White, with her boyfriend hunting her just like the huntsman.

I like this idea.

“What are you doing here?”

Evelyn opened her eyes and realized she was lying on the ground. She must have fallen asleep sunbathing or something. She slowly stood up and her eyes met with a blue woman. Not a woman in blue. Well, technically, yes. A slender, blue-skinned and blue-clothed woman stood before here, eying her curiously.

“I don’t know. Um. You. You’re blue, though,” she said, raising an eyebrow and keeping her distance from the stranger.

“Of course I am, silly! You’re not blue, what’s up with that?” The girl replied. “What’s your name, anyway?”

“I’m Evelyn,” she replied.

“Evelyn. How nice. It’s lovely to meet you, then. My name is Sally.” Evelyn was surprised to find that her name was so normal. “Did anyone come with you?”

“No! No..I’m by myself. I wanted to be by myself, so I came by myself,” Evelyn replied rapidly.

“Okay, okay!” Sally laughed, holding her hands up. “Seeking solitude. I get it.”

Evelyn struggles to keep hold of her umbrella, but they are wrestling it from her with ease, almost as if she were a person made of straw. She can’t hold on. “No!” she screams frantically. “Please! No! Don’t take it! You can’t! The darkness will get me! IT’S GOING TO SWALLOW ME, YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND!”

But they pay her no mind, and they are gone almost as quickly as they arrived, taking her only protection away from her. She begins to tremble violently. She knows what is coming. It’s the shadow; the darkness. So black that everything else is lost. She will be lost, too - she knows it.

Sure enough, she sees it beginning to creep toward her, nearer and nearer. She knows it is no use now. She won’t be able to get away. The terror grabs hold of her as she watches the tips of her fingers disappear into the darkness, and she lets out one long, solitary scream, which ends in desperate sobs. She can see nothing. She can smell nothing. There is simply, nothing.

Then, she sees a tiny gold light.

Followed by more. And more and more and more until she is surrounded by beautiful golden light. ”This is what I’ve been running from?” She asks. “Oh, but this is beautiful!”

Roger: Evelyn, you are more wonderful than anyone I’ve ever met. I love spending time with...

Roger: Evelyn…

Evelyn: What?

Roger: Will you marry me?

Evelyn: What?!

Roger: Well, will you?

Evelyn: Roger…I…I… I’ve got to go!

Evelyn leaves. You hear that it is raining.

Blackout. Hear the sound of tires squealing.

Fireflies on the Water (2002), by Yayoi Kusama, is an installation made of 150 lights, mirrors and water. It offers an out-of-this-world experience from the confines of a modest room paneled with mirrors and adorned with 150 tiny beads of light deliberately suspended throughout the compact space. Upon entering the room, there’s an illusionary effect that gives the impression of infinite space reflected on all sides and in the two inches of water that flows below.
